Pageant prep season is in full swing. Contestant numbers are out, paperwork is in, and your focus is probably locked on interview answers, wardrobe choices, and stage walks. But while everyone else is polishing their competition routines, I want to zoom out for a second.
Because if you truly want to step into the titleholder role, you need to prepare not just for the competition, but for the job.
Let’s talk about how to go from volunteer hours and good intentions to building a platform that’s strategic, sustainable, and aligned with your long-term goals.
If you’ve ever caught yourself asking, “Will the judges like my platform?” – pause.
That’s not the right question.
The better one is:
“Do I love this enough to keep doing it long after my title year ends?”
Your service initiative isn’t a prop for competition. It’s the foundation of your leadership identity. When you choose a cause that’s genuinely meaningful, you bring energy, consistency, and credibility that can’t be faked (and that’s what judges and communities respond to).
Your initiative should evolve as you do. My own journey started after losing my brother, Tyler, to addiction and suicide. My early years in the Miss America Organization gave me a platform to turn that pain into purpose, but eventually, I hit burnout. Talking about trauma nonstop took a toll, so I pivoted.
I shifted my focus toward empowering women, mind, body, and soul. I launched a nonprofit, raised scholarships, and created new opportunities that reignited my energy. Later, I returned to my roots, relaunching Tyler’s Legacy: The Impact of Substance Use on the Family, but this time with more clarity, confidence, and lived experience.
That evolution taught me something powerful:
You can change your platform without losing your purpose.
Growth doesn’t mean inconsistency, it means alignment.
Volunteering is beautiful. It’s where most of us start. But if you want long-term, tangible impact, it’s time to move from volunteering to partnering.
For example:
Ask yourself:
The sweet spot is where those three overlap.
What can you bring to the table?
If imposter syndrome creeps in, remember: value doesn’t require permission. You already have something powerful to offer: your authentic perspective.
Keep it simple:
“Hi [Name], my name is [Your Name] and I’m passionate about [Your Cause]. I love the work your organization is doing around [Their Mission] and would love to explore ways I might be able to support or collaborate with your team.”
That’s it. You don’t need a perfect pitch deck. Just start the conversation.
And if they don’t reply? Don’t take it personally. Nonprofits are busy. Follow up twice, then move on.
Go in with an open mind. You’re not there to prove yourself. You’re there to listen, learn, and explore how your missions align. Let the ideas evolve naturally.
Your platform isn’t just about service, it’s professional development in disguise.
Everything you do through your initiative strengthens your résumé and your confidence. That’s why I always tell my clients:
“Your platform is the foundation of your professional identity.”
A strong platform doesn’t end when your title year does.
If it’s authentic, it evolves with you.
Every partnership you build, every project you lead, every connection you nurture – those become seeds that grow your career, your network, and your purpose-driven legacy.
So, as you prepare for your next competition, remember:
Start where you are. Lead with heart. Do what energizes you and let your crown amplify, not define, your mission.
